Pearl Barley Porridge (麥米粥) - Wong Kei Tong Shui (North Point) 王記糖水 (北角)

Pearl Barley Porridge (麥米粥) - HK$15/17  small/large (pictured)

The Hungry Nobody score - 7/10
Tough to find somewhere that makes this well in HK nowadays, Wong Kei is one of them!

Wong Kei Tong Shui (North Point)
5 Shu Kuk Street, North Point
王記糖水
北角書局街5號地下
Hours: Mon-Sat 1800-0300

What I did like was that the pearl barley is not overcooked.  It's melted, but still has that chewiness to it that makes this so satisfying.  The soup also has peanuts that have softened from the cooking and add further depth to the flavor when you get a mix of both in your spoon.  Perfect type of dessert to have when it's cool outside (which isn't often in HK) and want something to warm you up.

What I didn't like was that this dessert was a bit too sweet for my liking.  I realize that perhaps most patrons appreciate their desserts sweet, and I like my desserts a touch less sweet.  But if you prefer to taste more of your dessert than just sweetness, you'll understand why after you order this.  It's still a very good dessert, but it'd be better if they went easy on the rock sugar.

Note:  I got this as take away and didn't dine on location.
